MoKontrol - Time Lapse

V1 Gimbal Trio

MoKontrol is my venture into motion controlled time lapse photography and video.

My Time Lapse Inspiration

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the combination of art and technology and motion controlled time lapse is one of my all time favorite examples. My love of time lapse blossomed when my dear friend Chris Brock introduced me to the movie Koyaanisqatsi in the mid 80s. I was amazed how time lapse could reveal patterns, which are normally not obvious in real time. Sometimes extremely slow moving objects or events (like snails slithering along or the transition of fall colors), through the magic of time lapse, became much more obvious and absolutely mesmerizing.  Like how traffic flow, when speed up, can appear to mimic a cardiovascular system or how clouds constantly evaporate and condense creating stunning liquid like flow.

The first time I recall experiencing a motion controlled time lapse was in 1992. I was touring Colonial Williamsburg, VA when I noticed The Kimball Theatre was playing Baraka. I was blown away! Those silky smooth pans, tilts and dolly moves through the pyramids while the sky zips by.

My attempt to predict the future.

Motion controlled time lapse is not only an exercise in patience, but also an attempt to predict the future. It is one thing to capture a single still shot but to predict and attempt to anticipate what will be happening minutes, hours or days later can be an incredible challenge. I have had achieved some incredible results but not without some incredible failures.

Here is my 2007 time lapse video sampler on YouTube.
